About Dan Shahin

Experienced Leader, Community Advocate, Ready to Serve

Dan Shahin with family

Dan Shahin is a dedicated Arcata resident who graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Francisco State University. He has lived in Humboldt County for over 12 years, 10 in Arcata, where both of his children were born and now attend elementary school. As a software engineer working from home and husband to an art therapist who has worked in local schools for over a decade, Dan understands firsthand the challenges facing working families in our community.

Dan brings extensive leadership experience to the campaign, having served as Chief Technology Officer of Strategic Organizing Systems, specializing in work for labor unions, before starting Dan Shahin Consulting Inc during the pandemic. He has owned and operated several successful small businesses, including an award-winning comic book shop, giving him insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Arcata's local business community.

Community Involvement

Dan's commitment to public service is demonstrated through his volunteer work on the Arcata Economic Development Committee for two years, where he gained valuable experience in municipal governance and economic policy. His dedication to resonable yet truthful civic discourse led him to write the draft of the Arcata Ceasefire Resolution that was unanimously adopted by the City Council.

As Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (HUUF), Dan also serves on the social action committee, working to serve the broader community. This role has strengthened his commitment to collaborative leadership and community engagement. This has led to an ongoing commitment from HUUF to the Peninsula Union School District, among other causes.

Vision for Arcata

Dan's vision for Arcata centers on four key areas: affordable housing, environmental sustainability, community engagement, and economic development. He believes that through collaborative leadership and strategic planning, Arcata can address its housing crisis, protect its natural resources, create quality jobs, and ensure that all residents have a voice in local government.

With his combination of professional expertise, community involvement, and fresh perspective, Dan Shahin is ready to serve Arcata with integrity, transparency, and dedication to the common good. He looks forward to working with fellow council members, city staff, and residents to build a stronger, more sustainable future for our community.
